2015 Vegan Birthday Freebies

December 31, 2015 By chow 7 Comments

Pressed Juicery Freeze

Another year, another birthday, another delicious vegan meal. Here’s a rundown of free vegan birthday food I got this year.

My new b-day favorite is Pressed Juicery freeze which is their cold-pressed juice frozen to a consistency like soft serve. I got half Citrus (orange, apple, pineapple, coconut meat and dates) and half Fruit (fuji apple, strawberry, coconut meat, dates), no toppings. Sign up for their loyalty program in-store and get a free juice or freeze for your birthday.

Pizza Studio Vegan Pizza

A very close second is Pizza Studio, a choose your own crust, sauce and unlimited toppings on a thin-crust pizza place. I went with the rosemary herb crust with tomato sauce, mushrooms, garlic, artichoke hearts, olives, roasted broccoli, zucchini and potatoes, caramelized onion and vegan cheese. Enroll in the Pizza Studio Rewards Program to get your free pizza during the week of your birthday.

Sprinkles Vegan Red Velvet Cupcake

There’s still only one vegan option at Sprinkles, the vegan red velvet cupcake. On the plus side, they’ve changed their birthday club so you’re not required to only get your free birthday cupcake on your actual birthday. Now you have a week after receiving the birthday email.

Veggie Grill Banh Mi Salad

There’s also been a change with the Veggie Grill birthday reward as well, instead of a free entree, you now have to purchase an entree to get a free birthday entree. I got the fried crab cake sandwich which I’ve previously tried. To balance it out, I also got the Banh Mi Salad – organic pressed and glazed tofu, char-grilled eggplant, house-pickled carrots, white cabbage, fresh jalapenos, basil, cilantro, mint, marinated kale and lightly tossed in a 5-spice glaze. It’s savory and sweet, very flavorful and fresh tasting. I did have to cut the tofu into smaller pieces to make for easier eating. Sign up for VG rewards to get the birthday coupon, it’s good for 14 days from when the email is sent.

Starbucks Peach Green Tea Lemonade

Starbucks doesn’t have much in way of vegan food, there’s the multi-grain and plain bagel and the Hearty Veggie & Brown Rice Salad Bowl, which I tried several times to get but each time, the store was out of that item. I ended up getting a Peach Green Tea Lemonade. Register a Starbucks card to get a birthday reward of food or drink.

Once again, I didn’t make it to any of these places:
Jamba Juice, free smoothie or juice
Red Robin, free birthday burger
Rubio’s, free meal up to $7
Johnny Rockets, free hamburger with a purchase of any entree and drink
Noodles & Company, free birthday bowl

All in all, some great birthday freebies to celebrate another year of being older, wiser and vegan. Be sure to sign up at least 30 days before your birthday to get the reward in time. Wherever you are, whenever your birthday, wishing you an awesome year.

Trader Joe’s Brownie Crisp

December 24, 2015 By chow 3 Comments

Trader Joe's Brownie Crisp

Dear Santa,
Sorry I’m not much of a baker. Instead I will be leaving out for you a bag of Trader Joe’s Brownie Crisp. A full bag, mind you. I hope you like them, they’re kinda like a brownie but thin, crisp and crumbly with chocolate chips and chunks. Vegan and gluten-free too.

Normally, I’m a soft-and-chewy-cookie type of person. The only reason why I even like TJ’s Brownie Crisp is that I can dunk them into a glass of cool, refreshing non-dairy milk. They’re somehow better that way. While the first bag was great, the second bag only had a couple of whole pieces, all the rest were already broken and my dunking plans unexpectedly averted. I had to use a fork to fish out the small pieces to resume dunking.

Santa, I’ve been really good. But if your bag of crispy brownie cookies is full of crumbles, 1. it’s not my fault and 2. they’re perfect as a topping for ice cream. So I also left out a pint of coconut milk ice cream for you. No worries if it’s a little melty by the time you get to it – it’ll be like a milkshake (I know this from experience). Thanks Santa and happy holidays!

Bliss Cafe Gluten-free Vegan Donuts

December 10, 2015 By chow 5 Comments

Bliss Cafe Gluten-free Vegan Donuts

What better way to start off a crisp cool morning than to scarf down a donut? A vegan donut, that’s what. Gluten-free too. And fluffy. Well, as fluffy as a gluten-free donut can be, which was surprisingly, pretty darn fluffy. Where can you find such a delectable thing? Bliss Cafe in downtown San Luis Obispo, California.

Sadly, it’s been awhile since I first visited. I’ve had no luck in convincing the rest of the family to dine there. Any mention of eating “healthy” food and I get multiple yucky faces in response. Needless to say, I don’t get to eat at Bliss as often as I would like. But after hearing they had vegan donuts, I was determined to stop by.

Bliss Cafe Gluten-free Vegan Donuts

I loved the Maple Glaze, without a doubt, one of my favorite donuts of all time. The glaze is so good, full of maple flavor but not overly sweet. The Cacao Nibs chocolate donut is equally good. Next time, I’ll try the other two flavors, Cinnamon Sugar and Powdered Sugar. A bit pricey at three bucks each, but so worth it. No yucky face here.
