Sweet Earth Natural Foods Artisan Bowls

August 20, 2016 By chow 11 Comments

Sweet Earth Natural Foods Kyoto Stir Fry

Due to binge-watching the Rio Olympics, I haven’t been cooking as much as usual. Fortunately, I found loads of Sweet Earth Natural Foods Artisan Bowls in the frozen section at Target, so far the only place I’ve seen them. And with a buy one, get one free coupon from the Sweet Earth site, it’s practically free. Not really, but still $3.99 for two packages is pretty good.

There’s quite a variety of vegan and vegetarian flavors. Of the five vegan options, I’ve tried four so far. The fifth, Moroccan Tagine which I really wanted to try, was sadly out of stock. All were microwaved for a few minutes according to the package instructions. There’s also directions for a conventional oven if you don’t have a microwave.

Kyoto Stir Fry

I think it’s the same filling as in their Kyoto frozen burrito (which I love) but in a bowl. It’s got the same Japanese flavors, taste and texture – shiitake mushrooms, tofu, seaweed and bright green edamame in a ginger sesame sauce over brown rice. Probably my favorite, a gold medal.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods General Tso's Tofu

General Tso’s Tofu

Another gold medal winner with its excellent flavor. It’s a little bit spicy but not overly so. Nice firm tofu in a tangy sweet-and-sour sauce with broccoli over brown rice. At 280 calories it’s a little light for a meal, I could have used a bit more rice. Then again the low calories might actually be for the best what with all the sitting around watching other athletes run, jump, and play.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods Bean & Mango Cubano

Beans and Mango Cubano

Caribbean-inspired bowl of flavor-packed black beans, quinoa and mango pieces. Mango! You don’t see that in everyday frozen entrees. Quite filling too with 12 grams of protein, 320 calories. My least favorite though, nothing wrong with it per se, just my personal preference for more Asian type of flavors. I would have gotten the Moroccan Tagine instead if it was in stock.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods Curry Tiger

Curry Tiger

Brown rice and quinoa bowl with curried lentils and sweet potatoes for the couch potato that I’ve been lately. It’s got the bold curry taste of East Asia. Also one of the more filling options with 15 grams of protein, 370 calories. And it comes with a side of broccoli. See how it’s off to the side? I didn’t put it there, it came like that.

Besides being a local company, located in Moss Landing along the Monterey Bay coastline, I’m a huge fan of many of the other Sweet Earth Natural Foods products, from their frozen burritos to their line of seitan. The Artisan Bowls is a great addition to their lineup whenever you’re too busy, for whatever reason, to cook.

It’s All Gravy

July 31, 2016 By chow 7 Comments

Miso Tofu with Truffle Coconut Gravy from It's All Gravy Food Truck

It’s All Gravy. It sure is.

What could be better than a food truck that specializes in modernizing the comfort food that is gravy? When it has a vegan option right off the menu. No need for a special request to leave off this or that.

Just order the MeSoTofu for a bowl of miso and chipotle marinated deep-fried tofu squares smothered with a truffle coconut gravy all atop of white rice with a side of spicy pineapple chunks. Doesn’t that sound delightful? It sure was.

Tip: if you’re eating it right then and there, dig in. If you’re getting it for later or can’t eat the whole thing in one go, get the gravy on the side to pour on top at your leisure.

A comfy food truck for everyone, I’m told the meaty items are also quite good. Super nice guys working there too. It’s all gravy and then some.

Mellow Yellow Kiwi Salsa

July 20, 2016 By chow 12 Comments

Sungold Yellow Kiwi

Have you ever tried a yellow kiwi? I first spotted them at the Asian supermarket last year. The lady in front of me in the checkout line was buying a whole flat of them. I asked about the yellow kiwi and she said they were good, sweeter than the green kind. But by the time I remembered and went back to the store, they were already gone for the season.

My chance came when bags of the SunGold kiwis popped up recently at the local Trader Joe’s (a bag of 6 for $2.99), ripe and ready to eat when they have a slight give to them. They are indeed sweeter and not tart like the regular green, hairy kiwis. The texture is also a tad softer. With its hairless, thinner, and smoother skin, just cut in half and easily scoop out the golden-yellow kiwifruit with a spoon and enjoy as is.

Feeling a bit more fancy, I also made yellow kiwi salsa. Mango is usually my choice for a fruit salsa, happily, kiwi works just as well.

Yellow Kiwi Salsa

Yellow Kiwi Salsa
2 yellow kiwi, scoop out of its skin and diced
1 tablespoon pickled or raw red onion, diced
1 small green onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 small avocado, diced
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
A few sprigs of cilantro, chopped

In a bowl, combine the ingredients, and gently mix together. Chill until ready to serve with your favorite tortilla chips.
