The other day for lunch, I picked up dim sum from the WoKitchen food truck. And not some crazy fusion mashup, but solid, authentic Chinese dim sum. Surprised and delighted to see a few vegan items on the menu, I ordered the six piece mix-and-match dim sum set, two of everything that was marked vegan. Super quick too, since I arrived at the truck shortly after they opened up for business, I got my order right away.
Here’s a break down of my meal components: starting with an appetizer of Veggie Eggrolls. They’re just like spring rolls but with a variety of veggies, not just cabbage like I’ve had at other Asian restaurants. Comes with your choice of several different sauce packets. The order taker had to repeat the choices twice because I couldn’t decide. I settled on the Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce but ended it up not using it. I didn’t think the food needed extra sauce.
For the main, a couple of Veggie Buns, also known as bao. The steamed bun was filled with what looks to be a well-seasoned mixture of savory Chinese mushrooms and tofu. My favorite thing, it’s been awhile since I’ve had a bao as dim sum restaurants around these parts only offer meaty ones. The red dot on top is to differentiate the veggie filling. Since it’s red food coloring, I just pinched that little part off.
And for dessert, Sesame Balls. Made from a dough of sticky rice flour and coated with sesame seeds, then fried so it’s crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside with a sweet red bean filling.
All in all, pretty good for $7.50. They also have a wok dish of stir-fried braised tofu and veggies that I considered for all of two seconds. For me, a no-brainer as vegan dim sum is harder to find. And the WoKitchen food truck is a great find.

It sure looks tasty — especially the bao and the egg rolls. I’m not a big fan of sweetened beans, though the outer crust of the dessert is very appealing! I probably wouldn’t be able to eat any of it without exchanging the deliciousness for stomach pains. : ( Sigh. I used to love egg rolls.

Growing up, I didn’t like sweetened beans either. Now I do. Maybe it’s an acquired taste. I think the sesame balls may be gluten-free and there’s always the stir-fry dish. :-)

I love both bao and egg rolls so I’m currently wishing this truck was parked next to my hotel!

Wish it was parked next to me too! :-)

It really is a shame (and surprising) that vegan dim sum remains do difficult to come by. Those sesame balls look good! And what a deal- way cheaper than most lunches in the bay area, no contest.

Vegan dim sum doesn’t seem to exist round these parts, more’s the pity. I’m so jealous of a nearby bao seller! The red bean dish is also calling to me…
