Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos

July 6, 2008 By chow 12 Comments

Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos

I had another can of jackfruit in the cupboard just begging to be made into something. Over the weekend, I decided to give Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos from The Urban Housewife a try.

I made a few minor changes to the recipe. I was out of the chile powder so I just left that out.

I don’t have a crock pot or slow cooker, so I cooked the jackfruit in my rice cooker on the slow setting, just like I did for the BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich. As I don’t feel comfortable just leaving the rice cooker unattended, I set it up on a morning when I knew I would be in all day.

I added all of the ingredients and set the cooker for 4 hours. I did have to add a bit of water a couple of times, since it looked like it was starting to get too dry and sticking to the bottom. But other than that, it came out great. It’s an easy recipe and the results are flavorful and a bit on the spicy side.

That looks tasty. We have a faux pork around here, Match, that I might be able to substitute!

    chinchin – Thanks!

Lisa – Thanks! I checked out Match, seems like an interesting product. Unfortunately, there’s a 4 pound minimum order, I’m hoping a nearby store will carry it in the future.

I can’t beliove how much that looks like real pork carnitas. I’ve also never heard of jackfruit and I’ve never seen faux pork. I’ll have to search around a little next time I’m at Whole Foods and then give this recipe a try. Thanks!

Jennifer – I know, it’s a little scary how similar it looks to the real stuff. :-o

You can find canned jackfruit at the Asian grocery store. I haven’t seen the faux pork at my local Whole Foods but maybe they’ll have it at yours.

What brand of canned jackfruit do you use? I’m in ON, Canada and so far haven’t found it nearby.

Sarah – I used Sun Voi brand of canned jackfruit. I don’t think the brand matters as much as it just needs to be the young green jackfruit in brine or water.

Good luck in your search. :-)

I tried making these off of UHW’s recipe. I followed the recipe. I cooked them in my crock for 8 hours. It just wasn’t good. I must have done something wrong. =(

Sorry to hear your jackfruit didn’t work out. Was it the taste? texture? something else?

I personally liked the jackfruit more when I used it in taquitos instead of tacos.
