I’ve been drinking Odwalla’s Superfood for years, so I’m no stranger to green drinks. But I didn’t think to make my own until I saw a green smoothie on VeganTickles blog awhile back. With that bright green color, I’ve been meaning to try it and finally got around to it.
I made some changes to the recipe – I used soymilk instead of water and grapes instead of the pineapple because that’s what I had in the fridge. It came out delicious, taste just like a smoothie.
I know some people make a yucky face when they see the green. Maybe they think it tastes like green vegetables. It doesn’t.
It’s very light and refreshing and very nutritious. The trick is to make sure you have enough of the other ingredients so you don’t have a strong vegetable taste.
Would you be more willing to try it if it was in a funny green cup? Yes, yes?
Green Smoothie
Makes about 2 2/3 cups
2 bananas, sliced into rounds and frozen
4 green kale leaves
1 cup soymilk
1/2 cup grapes
Separate the kale leaves from the stem, wash and tear into smaller pieces. Combine everything in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Green smoothies are so good! I’ve made some yummy ones at home, but none that taste as good as Odwalla Superfood (they’re a lot cheaper, though!).
I like kale a lot but I have never put it into a smoothie before. And I will admit to making a slight yucky face when I think of green smoothies, yet I’m very intrigued at the same time and do want to try it. (I did make a smoothie with romaine recently and quite liked it!) I will make a point of saving a couple of kale leaves the next time I have some on hand.
Love that that funny cup! :)
Jennifer – Definitely a lot cheaper, if I do buy it, I usually get the large jug of the Odwalla Superfood at Costco. Cheapest I’ve seen anywhere.
Cassie – Just make sure you have enough fruit to make it sweet and you’ll be fine. Now that I made my first green smoothie, I want to try romaine and spinach too.
Love the cup! And the smoothie looks so healthy with the deep green color. I still haven’t made any smoothies at home yet!
This is a lovely green hue which I like … I’m so inspired to bring out my neglected blender to make smoothies now :D
Lisa (Show Me Vegan) – Thanks! It’s pretty easy to make smoothies at home and I don’t even have a fancy blender. I just got an decades ol’ one that somehow still does the job.
noobcook – Glad you like the color! It tastes good too! :-)
hi, I was stumbling this morning and came across your site. I LOVE green smoothies. the simplest one I make is 2 cups fresh pineapple, 2 handful of fresh baby spinach and 2 frozen bananas. Adjust thickness with pure alkaline water. Quite yum. also, in the summer, romaine leaves with watermelon. Just blend. No juicing for me anymore.
Those sound like great combos! I’ll have to give them a try sometime. Thanks!
I’ve just found your yummy blog and am reading back through all the posts. I wanted to share my current favourite green smoothie combo (I haven’t been measuring so no real amounts):
I soak “some” chopped dates in warm water for ten minutes or so, then blend with half a head of romaine, two ripe, juicy pears, and a generous sprinkle of nutmeg. A little soymilk if needed. Tastes great, and the bright green is lovely :)
J. – Thanks for your smoothie recipe! The chopped dates sound very interesting and sweet. I had no idea there were so many different kinds of green smoothies out there! :-)
