Have you ever tried a yellow kiwi? I first spotted them at the Asian supermarket last year. The lady in front of me in the checkout line was buying a whole flat of them. I asked about the yellow kiwi and she said they were good, sweeter than the green kind. But by the time I remembered and went back to the store, they were already gone for the season.
My chance came when bags of the SunGold kiwis popped up recently at the local Trader Joe’s (a bag of 6 for $2.99), ripe and ready to eat when they have a slight give to them. They are indeed sweeter and not tart like the regular green, hairy kiwis. The texture is also a tad softer. With its hairless, thinner, and smoother skin, just cut in half and easily scoop out the golden-yellow kiwifruit with a spoon and enjoy as is.
Feeling a bit more fancy, I also made yellow kiwi salsa. Mango is usually my choice for a fruit salsa, happily, kiwi works just as well.
Yellow Kiwi Salsa
2 yellow kiwi, scoop out of its skin and diced
1 tablespoon pickled or raw red onion, diced
1 small green onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 small avocado, diced
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
A few sprigs of cilantro, chopped
In a bowl, combine the ingredients, and gently mix together. Chill until ready to serve with your favorite tortilla chips.

I must admit, I rarely buy kiwis, so I’ve never noticed the yellow variety. Sounds like I need to take a closer look! They sound like a big upgrade over the usual green sort, but I have a feeling that your salsa would be great with either.

It’s been awhile since I bought kiwis but as soon as I saw the yellow ones at TJ, I just had to try them at least once. :-)

I have never seen a yellow kiwi so far – maybe they don’t make it across this side of the Atlantic? I don’t really like fruit in savoury type dishes, but I make a rare exception for fruit salsas – I love mango salsa, so I reckon I’d like this a whole lot too. Would green kiwi be ok to use too, until the yellow ones come this way?

I would imagine the yellow kiwis would eventually make it over to your neck of the woods. I’m guessing the green would work in the salsa but I haven’t tried it just yet.

I’ve never seen yellow kiwi, but I have to say when I was at farmers markets in California, I saw lots of things I never see here. A slightly sweeter kiwi would be a real treat. We bought giant bagfuls of kiwis when we were in New Zealand (many years ago) and I remember them as being sweeter than the ones we get here, but maybe my memory is playing tricks on me. I think kiwis would make a great salsa.

Yes, I’m very spoiled at the farmer’s market here in California. :-) I think you’re memory is probably fine. I’m guessing kiwis for export get pick early whereas kiwis that stay in New Zealand probably get to ripen longer on the tree.

Ooooh! I’ve never seen a yellow kiwi, but I love green kiwis! I’ll definitely be on the lookout at Trader Joes. I’m always a little bummed when my kiwi snack ends up on the tart side. These sound perfect!

Yup, somehow I mange to get at least one extra tart green kiwi whenever I buy them. No such problem with the yellow ones. :-)
