Ani’s Raw Food Asia is turning out to be one of my all-time favorite cookbooks, I’ve been making and learning about all sorts of new dishes.
I never really ate Korean food before, not even before I was vegan. Quick and easy to make, namuls are seasoned then mixed veggie side dishes that are served with rice. After being massaged with oil and seasonings, the veggies soften, almost like they’re cooked. See above photo, from front to back:
- Spinach Namul
- Shiitake Mushroom Namul
- Baby Bok Choy with Chinese Cabbage in Ginger Sauce – actually a Chinese side dish but I served it like it was one of the namuls
I also tried the Yellow Coconut Curry Vegetables – beautiful color and great flavor. The veggies were a tad too crunchy for me but I think that’s just a personal preference (I liked the namuls since they’re more similar to cooked food).
I did heat up the leftovers and that was better. Next time, I’ll heat the curry just a tiny bit. Ani said I could. She did. Twice. Right there on page 16 and 134.
And I made the Matcha Green Tea Ice Kream. I didn’t have a high speed blender so it could have been smoother than what is pictured. As I said here, I’m no fan of green tea ice cream by itself but it’s great when accompanied by a cookie, cake, or other ice cream.
It’s doubtful I’ll ever be a 100% raw foodist, but I’m finding more and more raw dishes that I like better than the cooked version. To see for yourself, I’m giving away a copy of Ani’s Raw Food Asia.

My dream Asian dish is one that I haven’t been able to recreate, miso udon at The Wynn buffet in Vegas. For what I can have on a more regular basis, I’d go with orange broccoli & tofu.

I laughed at the “Ani said I could”! Those namuls look divine; I haven’t had true Korean food since I went veg: I did love it. My favorite raw Asian dish (thanks to Ani) is a raw un-stir “fry” served over kelp noodles. Her teriyaki sauce is great, we use it a lot here.

Yay! I love these cookbook giveaways :) I REALLY want this book. My favorite Asian dish is Pad Thai. (vegan, of course) and well, veggie sushi rolls.

Most of what I cook is Asian-inspired, so I love to try a raw take on that! It’s so hard to pick a favorite food, but… I think that the pumpkin miso soup that they make at Miya Sushi is near the top of the list. So simple, yet complex in flavor.

Hey Chow,
I do love raw food but I do like to have the taste of cooked food. Being in the UK, cold food is not good for me but I occasionally whip up a simple raw dish. I am intrigued by the namal and the ‘cooked’ flavours. My favourite Asian food is raw coconut curry with kelp noodles from AuLaC in Fountain Valley, California – beyond awesome

You had me at Green Tea Ice Kream. My fav is probably sushi because it’s so versatile. It’s great to see a veg Korean cookbook, my friend told me it’s impossible to be a veg. in Korea due to all the meat-based dishes and lack of customization (nothing is made-to-order in restaurants), I’d like to prove to them otherwise :)

The raw namuls look delicious. I’m so used to eating cooked ones that raw versions never even crossed my mind.
Mmm I love Asian food. I have a few favorites, but one simple dish (a snack, really) that I can eat regularly is onigiri. Steamed rice and nori just make my stomach happy.

My fave Asian dish is veganized Vietnamese Bahn Mi… mmmm!

I like raw food a lot more in the warmer weather, and cooked when it gets chilly and damp. Where we live now we can walk to a raw food restaurant, and I’m getting very fond of their dishes! But you asked for a favorite Asian food, and that would have to be tofu skin hotpot from Bamboo Garden vegan Chinese restaurant in Seattle. I have some fresh yuba in the fridge right now and am going to attempt making a similar hot pot tonight. (Similar but different. :) )

My all-time favorite Asian dish is stir-fried noodles. I like it when they’re extra spicy and loaded with cashews, vegetables, and tofu.
Thanks for organizing this contest! It would be a real treat to win Ani’s book. I’ve enjoyed cooking out of her other books.
