Sweet Earth Natural Foods Artisan Bowls

August 20, 2016 By chow 11 Comments

Sweet Earth Natural Foods Kyoto Stir Fry

Due to binge-watching the Rio Olympics, I haven’t been cooking as much as usual. Fortunately, I found loads of Sweet Earth Natural Foods Artisan Bowls in the frozen section at Target, so far the only place I’ve seen them. And with a buy one, get one free coupon from the Sweet Earth site, it’s practically free. Not really, but still $3.99 for two packages is pretty good.

There’s quite a variety of vegan and vegetarian flavors. Of the five vegan options, I’ve tried four so far. The fifth, Moroccan Tagine which I really wanted to try, was sadly out of stock. All were microwaved for a few minutes according to the package instructions. There’s also directions for a conventional oven if you don’t have a microwave.

Kyoto Stir Fry

I think it’s the same filling as in their Kyoto frozen burrito (which I love) but in a bowl. It’s got the same Japanese flavors, taste and texture – shiitake mushrooms, tofu, seaweed and bright green edamame in a ginger sesame sauce over brown rice. Probably my favorite, a gold medal.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods General Tso's Tofu

General Tso’s Tofu

Another gold medal winner with its excellent flavor. It’s a little bit spicy but not overly so. Nice firm tofu in a tangy sweet-and-sour sauce with broccoli over brown rice. At 280 calories it’s a little light for a meal, I could have used a bit more rice. Then again the low calories might actually be for the best what with all the sitting around watching other athletes run, jump, and play.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods Bean & Mango Cubano

Beans and Mango Cubano

Caribbean-inspired bowl of flavor-packed black beans, quinoa and mango pieces. Mango! You don’t see that in everyday frozen entrees. Quite filling too with 12 grams of protein, 320 calories. My least favorite though, nothing wrong with it per se, just my personal preference for more Asian type of flavors. I would have gotten the Moroccan Tagine instead if it was in stock.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods Curry Tiger

Curry Tiger

Brown rice and quinoa bowl with curried lentils and sweet potatoes for the couch potato that I’ve been lately. It’s got the bold curry taste of East Asia. Also one of the more filling options with 15 grams of protein, 370 calories. And it comes with a side of broccoli. See how it’s off to the side? I didn’t put it there, it came like that.

Besides being a local company, located in Moss Landing along the Monterey Bay coastline, I’m a huge fan of many of the other Sweet Earth Natural Foods products, from their frozen burritos to their line of seitan. The Artisan Bowls is a great addition to their lineup whenever you’re too busy, for whatever reason, to cook.

Other than the fact that none of them seem to be available near me, they look great! Probably not for me because they don’t seem to be gluten-free, but they look like something my husband would love. I’ll have to keep my eye out in our local food co-op. It’s always handy to have a few “emergency” meals in the freezer.

Looks like the only one that might be gluten-free is the Black Bean & Mango Cubano. But it’s manufactured in a facility that processes egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and wheat as per the back of the box.

Kyoto would be my favorite, too. Ingredients look good except for the sugar (rice syrup and cane juice). Sugar helps to add shelf-life to a packaged food product. Kombu, canned aduki beans (canned beans are the best fast food), sesame oil and many of the other ingredients are staples in our household. I would be inclined to whip them up while binge-watching. Thanks for the idea. Cheers.

The ingredients are really good, including some organic too. Handy things to have in the pantry. I was doing pretty good at the beginning but the Olympic binge-watching lasted two weeks. :-)

oooh, excellent review! I don’t eat frozen meals often, but when that’s what it comes down to, I’m always so grateful that they exist for me. I’ve had a few Sweet Earth breakfast burritos and really liked them. I’ll definitely keep these in mind for future easy meal needs. Also, I”m with you on the binge watching of Olympics. I have SO MUCH still recorded, i”ll probably be watching the Olympics for months!

Yup, so happy they’re around for those times frozen food comes in handy. I haven’t tried their breakfast burritos yet, I’ll have to look for those next time.

I absolutely love Sweet Earth but haven’t yet been able to find their bowls. I must keep an eye out next time I’m shopping at Target… Who would have thought!

I know! Target has the Sweet Earth bowls and Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy ice cream all in the same area. :-)

It’s good you’ve found some vegan ready meals – they’re like hen’s teeth over here. And so cheap too – not only are they like hen’s teeth, they’re like hen’s teeth you need a mortgage for. I like the look of the Kyoto and General Tso’s bowls.
