Amy’s Vegan Margherita Pizza

March 10, 2012 By chow 8 Comments

Amy's Vegan Margherita Pizza

I’ve been really good about not buying pre-made food lately, what with reviewing cookbooks and all, I’ve been preoccupied with making homemade food to be tempted by anything from a box.

My mistake was wandering down the frozen food aisle only to come face-to-face with the new Amy’s Vegan Margherita Pizza with Daiya Cheeze on sale for $7.69. You know I have trouble resisting anything on sale. Plus it’s pizza. And it’s Amy’s.

Out of the oven, the top looked a bit on the oily side and of course, the Daiya cheese wasn’t all that melted. But then again, I have never gotten Daiya to really melt no matter how hard I try.

I thought the toppings looked a little on the skimpy side but it’s actually just the right amount for its size. The taste is savory with a bit of sweetness and a nice, crispy-on-the-bottom, fluffy-inside kind of a crust. The crust is also what I like to refer to as “rustic”, in that some parts are thicker than others. It gives it that handmade feel.

Amy's Vegan Margherita Pizza

I definitely prefer the Margherita over Amy’s other vegan pizza, the Roasted Vegetable with No Cheese, as it’s covered with roasted red peppers. With my severe aversion to bell peppers, I haven’t touched an Amy’s pizza with a 10-foot pole since then. It’s nice to be able to enjoy an Amy’s pizza now.

And how does Amy’s compare to Tofurky’s pizza? I liked them both and I would get either one again, depending on what’s on sale and what I feel like – Amy’s Margherita? Tofurky Sausage and Veggie? Tofurky Pepperoni? Tofurky Cheese? So many choices.

I’ve seen this at the store and wondered about it. I should have just gotten it, it looks good. Thanks for the review!

I really dig the Roasted Vegetable with No Cheese, if only because the sweet onion sauce Amy’s uses for that pizza is something I can’t replicate at home, cheaper. Amy’s pizzas are a tad expensive to get on a regular basis.

Great review, though. I’ll definitely pick one of these up if I don’t have time to bake one day.

I’m so jealous! I’ve been searching high and low for this darned pizza since I love pretty much everything Amy’s makes, but still no luck. I’m surprised by how scant the Daiya is on top, but it still looks quite tasty all the same.

Oh I didn’t realize Amy had a vegan pizza! Tofurky frozen isn’t so bad. I’ll have to check this one out.

Amy makes at least two other vegan “cheese” pizzas, a gluten-free rice crust pizza, and a rice crust spinach pizza with vegan mozzarella and ricotta.

I second Emeric’s comment about the Roasted Vegetable pizza. That onion sauce is killer! I haven’t bought an Amy’s pizza in years (because of the high price) but if I had to in a pinch, that’d be the one!

I try to eat right, but I’m not a vegan. However, about a month ago, my bloodwork showed my cholesterol as being higher than it should. My goal is to bring it down without medication. I love pizza (I love cheese) and I like Amy’s. It was BYGO at my local Whole Foods, so so I decided to give this a try. The smell from the oven was decidedly different from the one that regular cheese imparts while baking. When it came out of the oven, I sprinkled it with some fresh chopped garlic (which I always keep on hand, with olive oil). I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the Daiya. The crust was crisp and sweet and the tomatoes were tasty. I would purchase again. Here’s to lowering my cholesterol! :-)

Tofurky makes a delicious gluten-free sausage pest pizza now and I ate it recently! It is SO good!!!! Bought at Good Health in Quincy, Mass. Haven’t seen it yet at Whole Foods but requested it!
