Gluten Rolls For Thanksgiving

Gluten Rolls For Thanksgiving

For the last couple of years, I’ve managed to find something new and different to try for my holiday meal. It’s usually some sort of heat-and-eat thing as the kitchen as always busy.

Last year it was Gardein Savory Stuffed Turk’y, the year before it was Smoked Vegetarian Goose from Sogo Tofu, a small, local deli/shop that makes all sorts of vegetarian meat and soy products in San Jose.

This year I swung by Sogo Tofu and picked up gluten rolls that look vaguely like roasted chicken. They don’t particularly taste like poultry but they do have a nice flavor and a firm, chewy texture.

Gluten Rolls for Thanksgiving

I prefer the gluten rolls to any of the store bought stuff, probably because it’s freshly made and closer to something homemade (if you knew how to make those sorts of things). Still, I’m thankful that there are so many yummy and easy options nowadays. And extra thankful for all of you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Looks really good! So was it yuba or gluten?

I wish there were better places around here that sold chinese vegetarian like that. The few asian markets here in Rochester have one or two mock chicken/gluten and mock pork items, but they’re usually a little gross (dirty, wet and container semi-sealed … not very appetizing since they’re on the same shelf next to the chicken feet! – but I may try one soon).

    Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving 1!

It’s gluten, although it does kinda look like yuba. I’m pretty lucky to live near a place that makes the chinese vegetarian stuff. Sometimes the Asian supermarkets have the fresh mock items too, thankfully away from the chicken feet. :-)

That looks so much like the yuba rolls that I really want to make but haven’t gotten around to figuring out yet. How don earth did they get the gluten rolled thin enough to roll up?

Andrea – I’ve been on a mission to find recipes for some of these Chinese vegetarian things and so far no luck. :-(

What a good idea, those look amazing! I love layered yuba, which looks very similar to this. I wish I could find such a thing locally.
