Vegan Eats at Maker Faire Bay Area

Vegan Eats at Maker Faire Bay Area

This past weekend, I went to Maker Faire in San Mateo. It’s an event held at different cities around the country that celebrates DIY in arts, crafts, engineering and science.

One of the best things about the Bay Area faire, was the number of vegan food choices. There was vegan paella, vegan corn dogs and vegan dim sum.

I also saw veggie hamburgers, veggie pad thai, falafels and garlic fries. And veggie gyros with tempeh! I didn’t check to see if all of those items are in fact vegan or just vegetarian. I was just so happy to actually have choices.

I’ve tried the vegan paella before and it’s good. It’s all open so you can see the paella cooking in the extra large pans.

At the Clif Bar booth, they were offering up small samples of their many flavors as well as giving away full-size-still-in-the-wrapper samples. I grabbed a couple of the Clif Kids Twisted Fruit Rope and ZBar – a perfect snack for walking around the faire.

Wow, that’s awesome. My boyfriend and I went to the San Mateo Maker Faire in 2007 and there was hardly anything vegan! Glad to hear things have gotten better.

look at that paella – and that PAN! that crazy and so awesome! i’m so jealous of all those vegan offerings, and that’s pretty sweet on all the veggie options, too. tempeh gyros sound fantastical. oooh, my – seeing your vegan corn dog totally makes me want one. i need to find a good gluten-free recipe for them and veganize it so i can get my nom on. hooray for Clif samples, too – they’re always so darn tasty, i love that company!

Next year I’ll have to pay better attention to the vegan options. The vegan paella looks delicious! We did enjoy the veggie burger, falafel wrap & garlic fries, though.

Jen – I’m not sure when the vegan stuff was added. I went last year, and it seems like there’s even more vegan stuff this year.

jessy – I so wanted to try the tempeh gyros but the corn dog won out.

See – I kinda wanted the garlic fries too, so much to choose from! :-)
