Field Roast Classic Meatloaf

January 4, 2010 By chow 8 Comments

Field Roast Classic Meatloaf

Who doesn’t love a sale? Especially if said sale involves food. My local Whole Foods started carrying the Field Roast Classic Meatloaf and put it on sale.

I really like some of Field Roast’s other products so I had high hopes for this meatloaf. The main ingredient is vital wheat gluten combined with carrots, celery, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic and savory spices.

Preparation is pretty straightforward, the hardest part was getting the loaf out of its skin-tight plastic bag. Place it on a baking sheet, glaze with ketchup and stick it in the oven for 30 minutes to heat up and brown.

And brown it did. The Classic Meatloaf browns beautifully and smells delicious. Its got a great rich flavor. The texture is very similar to meatloaf as I remember it and just a tab more chewier. It’s kinda on the salty side but that’s pretty much the nature of most prepared food.

I have been dying to try the meatloaf, but can’t find it anywhere local in Denver, CO. Any suggestions on where to get some?

Melanie – You can check their website, http://www.fieldroast.com to see if there’s any stores near you. It’s also available online at http://www.pangeaveg.com, http://www.veganessentials.com or http://www.cosmosveganshoppe.com but it’s more expensive, about $8.50 plus shipping. On sale at the Redwood City Whole Foods, it was $5.29.

dan loves the field roast deli slices (the mushroom one is his fav), i might have to see if i can snag one of their meatloafs on sale for him sometime. i can’t do the gluten, but that doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy them!

It’s that “salty side” that keeps me away from this and most other prepared food. The more I reduce salt in my diet, the saltier these things taste. I tried some baked tofu the other day that felt like it was hurting my tongue because of all the salt. I’d probably buy this stuff if the salt were within reason.

oh cool, I picked one of these up on sale too… I have it in the freezer for a night when I don’t feel like cooking. I really like their roasts, so I’m stoked to give this a go.

patti – I get the meatloaf at my local Whole Foods. If you go to fieldroast.com, there’s a Where To Buy section to see if there’s any retailers near you. Unfortunately it doesn’t say which products those retailers carry.
