In the summer, I practically live on smoothies. On especially hot days, I don’t even bother with niceties such as a straw. I just chug-a-lug it for an immediate cool-down. I like to freeze the fruit I’m using so I don’t have to use ice cubes but it’s still nice and cold.
One thing about blueberries though – always make sure to brush or at least check your teeth before leaving the house. It’s not a pretty sight to be talking to someone with blueberries specks all over your mouth.
Blueberry Banana Smoothie
Makes about 16 ounces
1 banana, peeled, sliced and frozen
1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk
6 ounces vanilla soy yogurt
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
Dash of cinnamon (optional)
Toss all of the ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.

Smoothies are the greatest summertime treat! Yours looks so refreshing and I’m with you on the “check your teeth” tip. I’ve had some recent incidences with blackberry specks on my teeth! Egads!!
Lisa (Show Me Vegan) says
That is one psychedelic smoothie! Maybe we should start a round-up- I made some zucchini recently that was equally brilliant in hue.
Jana says
I make a similar smoothie using almond flavoured silken tofu in place of the yogurt. What is it about the blueberries that just thickens the smoothie right up? Whatever it is, they need to keep it up. I’ve never had cinnamon with mine though.. perhaps I’ll have to try that this morning!
jessy says
what a beautiful drink! :) we have a TON of blackberries growing in the field behind our house that i’ve been picking every day – and i’ve got soooooooo many bananas in the freezer that need to be used up! looks like i’m making this for my breakfast tomorrow! thanks for another great recipe!
Lisa (Show Me Vegan) says
Chow Vegan, FYI on the frozen corn chowder question. Taste and texture were great after freezing!
Kevin says
That looks good! What an amazing colour!
chow says
Jennifer – Thanks! Yup, I had a couple of times myself when I was in a hurry and glanced in the mirror right when I was leaving and it was “yikes”!
Lisa – Maybe we should do a round-up! Thanks for letting me know about the frozen corn chowder, that’s awesome news!
Jana – Almond flavoured tofu sounds great! Is it the blueberries that thickened it up? I thought it was the bananas or maybe it’s just the fruit in general. :-)
jessy – Thanks! I wish I had blackberries or any berries for that matter growing near me. I have to get mine at the farmer’s market. And they’re not the cheapest thing. You’re so lucky!
Kevin – Thanks!

I LOVE SMOOTHIES! Love the photo too! :)
Taymer says
I really like this one but since I have some strawberries I would replace ..hmm I wonder how the cinnamon would go with the strawberries
Monika says
That looks so tasty and good!
chow says
Donal – Smoothies are the best! Thanks!
Taymer – Strawberries would be great! I would think the cinnamon would go ok with the strawberries but you could just leave it out.
Monika – Thanks!

This may sound silly, but I use firefox as my browser and I use the bookmarks toolbar so that I can get to my favorites quickly, but not if they don’t have a favicon, because I delete the text to save space. You don’t have a favicon, or I would have placed your beautiful and helpful site on my tool bar favorites. For your fans, I recommend you designing or choosing a favicon.
Great site!
chow says
kate – It’s not silly, I had no idea. I’ll look into the favicon thing. Thanks for letting me know! Glad you like the blog. :-)

too bad soy gives you man boobs and i am lactose intolerant
chow says
Actually that’s not true, there’s no evidence that soy causes “man boobs”. You don’t see that happening in cultures where soy is consumed regularly, and not the overly processed stuff either but traditional soy dishes.
Bummer you’re lactose intolerant, maybe you could use rice or almond milk or juice and leave out the yogurt and just add more fruit.
Erin says
Just tried this and it’s awesome. I used the silken tofu instead of the yogurt only because I’ve always wanted to try it and it’s great, can’t taste it at all. I also used the vanilla soy milk rather than the unsweetened…don’t know if I’d do it that way again only because the vanilla REALLY stood out in flavor so you lost some of the natural flavors of the blueberries and bananas. Awesome recipe though, I’m always trying to find super healthy smoothie recipes!!!!

I like naturaldrinks and this one is TREAT
Brian says
I make my blueberry smoothie with
a banana,
a handful of frozen raspberries,
about a cup of frozen huckleberries/blueberries,
and enough pineapple juice to make it “drinkable”.
You can change it anyway you like to taste, but I don’t like milk/yogurt (or soy milk/yogurt), so I just fruit.
My wife and I drink these year round.
chow says
Erin – Yup, silken tofu works great too. Plain soy milk or yogurt is good if you want to get the full flavor of the fruit. The best part of smoothies is that you can pretty much use whether ingredients you want. Glad you like the recipe. :-)
darshil – Thanks, I like natural drinks too!
Brian – All fruit is good too. Sometimes I use orange juice in mine. I haven’t tried pineapple juice before, I’ll have to give it a go sometime. Thanks!
Monica Ricci says
OMG this looks incredible. I want one right now!
Kendra says
My son and I were drinking our favorite smoothie when I stumbled upon this recipe. Ours looks exactly the same! I also add in flax seed, wheat germ, and a probiotic. None of that changes the flavor, and it boosts the already high nutritional value. I also use unsweetened yogurt, strawberries, and honey. We have it everyday. I also have to watch my teeth for blueberries! Another tip- wash the glass right after drinking- it seems to turn to cement on the glass!
chow says
Monica Ricci – Thanks!
Kendra – Great idea to add more goodies, I’ll have to try those sometime. Thanks for the tips! Also washing out the blender right after making a smoothie is a lot easier than having it sit around.

photoshopped.
chow says
mallie nazzaro – Thanks for the great tips on lactose intolerant alternatives. Sometimes I like to get the six pack of the Stonyfield soy yogurt so I can have a smoothie every day. :-)
bob – Sorry buddy, but that is the color of a blueberry banana smoothie. Other people have confirmed that’s exactly how it looks.

I know options are limited when you are vegan but did you know that soy products are really bad for you?
chow says
Caitlin – That is not true. There is a lot of myths and half-truths about how soy is so bad. Here’s a link to an excellent article that addresses these issues.

Man this looks good. I can’t drink these things without having a diabetic episode. I crave these like I imagine women crave chocolate.
Great post!

The smoothie looks marvelous, thanks for sharing. Straws are horribly bad for the environment, and incredibly wasteful, chug a lug away without one!

I use this recipe all the time now! Thanks for posting!

I chuck in some hazelnuts with mine. Mmmm, nuts.
When left to stand, it does thicken, definitely the blueberries doin it, coz I make these with strawberries in place of the blueberries, and they never thicken up…??? :-D
