Earth Balance Cheese Puffs and Popcorn

April 11, 2013 By chow 9 Comments

Earth Balance Vegan Aged White Cheddar Puffs

I’ve been anticipating the arrival of the new Earth Balance Vegan Aged White Cheese Puffs at my local Whole Foods for what seems like forever. That day has finally arrived. With great relish, I opened the bag.

I thought they would be fluffier, like the super bright orange cheese puffs. Those were a favorite childhood snack that I was sad to leave behind. Although the Earth Balance puffs are a bit crunchier, they more than fill that snacky void with their cheesy goodness.

Covered in a powder that I’m guessing is the aged white cheese flavor, I love them. Sometimes I like to eat the puffs with chopsticks so I don’t get powder all over my fingers. The only bad thing is I can easily eat a whole bag all by myself.

Besides the puffs, there’s also Vegan Aged White Cheese Flavor Popcorn. A bit more subtle in taste than the puffs as there’s not as much powder covering the popcorn. Still very good. Another popcorn is Vegan Buttery Flavor (not pictured) which I didn’t find to be all that buttery, more like regular popcorn with a hint of butter.

I prefer the aged cheese flavor, the butter flavor I can just make at home. If I’m going to pay $3.99 for a bag of popcorn, it’s going to be for something I can’t easily make myself.

The only one I haven’t tried yet is the peanut butter popcorn, P.B. Popps. I can’t wait to see that one in the store.

These look yummy…. but definitely not a health snack as they contain sugar and maltodextrin (also a sugar). Also on checking out Earth Balance website, the ingredients include lactic acid – which as far as I know is extracted from milk!? If this is the case, then they can’t claim it to be vegan.

I have not tried the puffs yet, but I have tried the white cheddar popcorn. The popcorn is delicious. I am with you, I saw the butter flavor and thought about the price. I am not paying $3.99 for something I can make at home. I will await the arrival of the puffs. They are either always out of them or they have not arrived yet.

I seem to remember orange powder getting all over my fingers from cheese puffs, so I suppose a powdery coating would be needed for an “authentic” experience. I don’t miss cheese puffs, but these sound like a fun munch.

I’ve got a review of these coming up soon, too! Aren’t the puffs awesome? I wish they would sell just that cheesy powder… There’s just nothing else like that flavor.

I love the idea of using chopsticks to prevent messy cheeze fingers!

@kim According to http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/faqingredients.htm#lac lactic acid is vegan, despite its milky-sounding name: “If it’s lactate or lactic acid, it’s not from dairy (exception – sterol lactate due to the stearic acid).”

They contain lactic acid. Read labels people. A lot of company’s are stating their products are dairy free or vegan and they aren’t. Please look everytime. They do change ingredients.

To the people saying lactic acid isn’t from dairy. They are wrong. Research it. My daughter has a very serious allergy so I have. No, not all lactic acid is made from diary or lactose but it can be. ” a hyper-sensitive person should avoid it – just in case. As of now, lactic acid bacteria is usually cultured on a grain base, but this is not always the case and dairy (eg lactose) could have been used.” https://www.foodsmatter.com/allergy_intolerance/cow's_milk_allergy_management/articles/lactic-acid-04-12.html
